Economic weeding method for irrigated rice production in Bangladesh

چکیده

The study was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Regional Station, Comilla, during three rice growing seasons. The experiment consists of six weeding treatments with three replications. The objective of the experiment was to determine an economic weeding method as well as to improve water management practices of paddy rice. The study indicates that the continuous ponding (100±150 mm) is not effective for weed control and high yield. Similarly, continuous ponding of 30±70 mm with one hand weeding is not economically sound. Two hand weeding or one hand weeding plus herbicides can be recommended where labors are available. Otherwise only herbicides should be used to make weeding economic for pro®table rice production. The study reveals that continuous ponding required about 1.5±2.0 times more water than intermittent irrigation. # 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Sustaining productivity in boro (winter) season using minimal water through dry direct seeding of rice M. M. RAHMAN AND M. M. MASOOD

The sustainability of rice productivity in Bangladesh is likely to face major threat due to water shortage during boro (winter season). The conventional transplanted boro rice requires huge amount of irrigation water due to wastage of various means. It is an imperative task that water saving production technology is needed to replace the conventional system for sustaining boro rice production i...

Rice field geochemistry and hydrology: an explanation for why groundwater irrigated fields in Bangladesh are net sinks of arsenic from groundwater.

Irrigation of rice fields in Bangladesh with arsenic-contaminated groundwater transfers tens of cubic kilometers of water and thousands of tons of arsenic from aquifers to rice fields each year. Here we combine observations of infiltration patterns with measurements of porewater chemical composition from our field site in Munshiganj Bangladesh to characterize the mobility of arsenic in soils be...

Damaged Environments and Lives: The Bitter Harvest of Rice Policies in The Gambia

Introduction One of the tragic consequences of rice policies in The Gambia over the past twenty years is how severely they undermined the domestic rice sector.
